The Project

We have received a knitting Project! Mark Rautenbach, a lecturer at CPUT, has decided to lead the Surface Design first years into a big knitting project. This is going to consist of us knitting hundreds of little blocks and then assembling them to form a human face. The human face that we use will be a merging of all sixteen members of our class. We will thus all be knitting towards a knitted group selfie!

This just might be some fun.

Formal brief is listed below:

Facing a Group Brief

Learning Outcomes:

1.    To develop co-operation skills
2.    To develop knitting competence
3.    To develop a Blog
4.    Learn to read/write knitting patterns
5.    To develop documentations skills

Project:

[This project is working on three levels: Personal, group of four, and the entire class]

The entire group is working on one piece. This piece is a pixelated composite portrait including each member in the class. The portrait is made from 10 cm square pieces of knitting, in four different tones/colours.

The class is divided into four groups of four. Each group of four will work in one colour, developing the required number of squares in that colour for the whole portrait. Each group will develop as many different types of knitting patterns for their squares. The group documents the entire process on a blog. Each knitted square is photographed with clear knitting instructions.
Each group is responsible for the construction of one quadrant of the portrait.

Tasks:

1.    Have your portrait taken
2.    Develop your blog [use blogger]
3.    Decide which colour your group is working in
4.    Research knitting patterns, becoming familiar with the terms
5.    Reference all you research
